The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to sit down and reflect where you’re at in your career and where you want to be. Whether you’re looking for a job at a new company or looking to move up the ranks at your current job, it’s important to take the time to figure out what you want to achieve this year and to come up with a strategy for reaching your goals.
Here are 3 tips that’ll help you advance your career in 2021!

1. Negotiate Your Salary
Don’t be afraid to ask for what you’re worth.
If you successfully completed the interview process for a new job, remember that your employer chose you for the position and that you deserve to be well-compensated for the value you’re bringing to the company.
If you’re staying at your current job, you’ve demonstrated your value to your employer in the past, and you deserve a salary that reflects your worth, too.
To get the pay you deserve, it’s important to know the going rate for your position. Use Glassdoor's salary search tool to find data on average salaries for your position in your area, as well as information on the salaries offered for your position at certain companies. Use the salary information you find on Glassdoor to come up with a salary range you’d be satisfied with, and make sure you’re leaving enough wiggle room in your salary range for negotiations with your employer.
- Get to Know Yourself
If 2020 left you reeling and unsure of what you want out of your career, it’s time to start asking yourself some difficult questions.
Ask yourself:
-Is that what I want to be doing?
-Am I happy at work?
-What do people tell me I’m good at?
-Does my current employer really value me?
-Am I in the wrong career?
While coming up with answers to these tough questions may seem daunting, it’ll help you to discover what actually fulfills you and to build a meaningful career that excites you.

Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and make a career change, especially if you’ve realized that you’re unfulfilled or undervalued at your current job.
While the pandemic has hit some industries incredibly hard, other industries (like e-commerce, healthcare, and tech) are booming. Additionally, more and more remote jobs are being created, so your job search doesn’t have to be limited to one specific area.
Although there have been many layoffs and lots of uncertainty in the job market lately, companies are always hiring. It doesn’t hurt to see what’s out there, especially if your search ends with you finding a job that excites and fulfills you!
